Smaller projects
This is for the smaller projects I felt like mentioning, but don’t want to dedicate an entire site for.
The old UI used skeuomorphism, which simply put means it looks like real buttons and elements with light cast onto them. To me, that made elements look like it was part of a truck or vehicle. The modern UI is flat and modern, which is trendy, but doesn’t say much. In my opinion, that makes it feel disconnected from what the game is about, so I decided to mix them together and give my own answer to what it could look like.
I decided to keep a flat-style appearance to keep the overall modern direction the game has taken. What I did was add more life into the UI with a colorful background, which my idea was to be a video playing in the background. I also added a bit more text to the menus to make it clear what menu is for what.
I also made the profile section appear more as a driver’s license and removed the progress bar to only keep the most important info at a first glance.
Below you can see a better idea of what it would look like.
The background video belongs to SCS Software, titled “American Truck Simulator: The All New Volvo VNL” on Youtube.
In the videos, you can see a better idea of what I tried to achieve. I made the buttons clickable with a rounded edge to both highlight them, but also give them a more button-like feel.
My project has not been tested with feedback, but it was a fun project nonetheless.
This little project was an attempt to make the iphone timer into a quick, accessable widget using skeuomorphic design. In this context, I wanted the timer to be set with a dial that would appear upon tapping and holding on top of the clock.
The flow would be:
Tap and hold on the widget -> Dial appears -> turn dial clockwise for more time, counter-clockwise for less -> release dial -> start button appears -> press start -> timer counts down.
In the process, I then tried to also add a stopwatch feature into the same widget you could choose between with a swipe. The whole project didn’t last long, however. Too many reality-checks started showing: widget was too small to work properly, how would you stop or reset the time, what about small adjustments to seconds or hours etc.
I still think the idea is there, but it would have to work differently from my original vision. Either way, fun little project that tought me how to create cool lighting effects with color gradients.
